I'm not a film reviewer, but I enjoy films. I am also a teacher, which kind of makes me opinionated. I'm currently watching "The Invention of Lying". Now, it's not a great film, but it's interesting. And to me, that makes a change. The concept of people only speaking the truth and speaking their minds was odd to begin with, but actually became good. The added bonus of the inclusion of Stephen Merchant and "Barry from Eastenders" made me grin. Today's question: can you recommend either a good film to watch or an interesting one?

Ever had a day where you've left your phone behind and you've only realised when you've passed the apex on your way to work? That point of no return? No diary. No podcasts. No calls. No texts. No clue! I wish I wasn't so dependent on my phone, but there it is. A large part of my life in a tiny hand-held gadget. Today's question: what would you miss most about yours? I have been inundated with no requests to tell you what the film was like. So, if you don't care or don't want to know, then please don't read on...! The film was shown (and watched) in 3D IMAX and it was very watchable. I enjoyed the film. The action sequences are very fast and I found myself hold my breath at times. In fact, the more ridiculous the fight scene, the more I laughed. I foresaw the death of Stephen Fry('s character) and it came as no surprise. Nor the death of the dragon. Nor.. Etc... However, I enjoyed the film and it held my interest. If you are a fan of these films, you'd enjoy it. It is worth a rewatching in the future, but not any time soon. I'd give it a solid 7/10. It would have scored higher if I'd been surprised. I know I've read the story, but there was nothing that made me feel the way I did when I saw "Interstellar". Today's question: was it worth staying up so late for? It's a school night. I have a book or two that will remain unmarked (until tomorrow) and a box of papers to look through (sitting under my desk at school) and an appointment with Bilbo and chums! I was first read "The Hobbit" when I was at primary school, and as a teenager read "The Lord of the Rings" - a book I have read many times since. (It's in my top five favourite books but after "The Stand" and "The Talisman" both by Stephen King!) It's unusual (though not unheard of) to go out for a late evening on a school night, but tomorrow's lessons are planned and I have an ironed shirt or two on standby. It IS possible to have a life as a teacher, but it often requires careful planning. Doubly, as I'm meeting a teacher from another (rival!) school. It should be fun. However, as Thing 2 has reverted to not sleeping the night through, it had better hold my interest to keep me awake! Today's question: how long until Hollywood "reboots" or remakes it? This new (blog) post is about post. Working long hours at school, with a wife who works and seldom (though occasionally) people at home, it is often easier to have post - eapecially parcels and packages - delivered to the school. There is always someone around to sign for them or take ownership of them, which has saved me many a trip to a sorting office to collect them. In particular, it is easier for me to get presents for my better half sent to school so that they can be kept under the radar. I also have established a name for myself as having a gift for buying gifts! The women I work with love having a look at what I've bought and asking me to train their husbands! There is a risk inherent in having stuff sent to you there. The "accidental opening" of a parcel or letter. Now, I am not complaining that this has happened to ME, but I do know people to whom this has happened. Take care. Today's question: has it happened to you? And if so, were there consequences? The first day of school can always be daunting. Even for an old (or older) hand such as myself. I didn't think I was bothered, but to be honest I've had better night's sleep.
Today was the first day of our new Head. It was an INSET (not a "Bug Day" as a former pupil once claimed having misheard "insect day"!) about Computing which was well-received by all. Then time to meet and greet. Any change is bound to bring differences, but I am certain that this appointment will bring even greater things for our school. Of course, I will miss acting as Deputy - but I'm here if they need me! I will enjoy getting to grips with the children's learning again and doing that thing I like most about my job - teaching! Today's question: would you rather have an INSET day at the beginning of the term, the middle or the end? (Me? The end!) So, I did this experiment where I posted a picture on Twitter with my class to see how many retweets it would get. It got a few. (Well, over a 1000.) Then, a movie star (she's in "Maze Runner" and other films) retweeted it for me as her cousin is in my class. That got a whole bunch more tweets. As a social experiment, it worked well. What I am bemused by, is the people who have been retweeting. Especially the young Australian ladies who obviously know the importance of keeping safe on the Internet. Have a look. Retweet yourself. I'm @MrNeaves I take no responsibility for what you may find! Today's question: have you retweeted my penguin yet? The LEGO Movie has been shown in our house. And I had seen bits of it on a flight across to the States. For those who haven't seen it, it has a song. "Everything is awesome". The song isn't. But it's an ear worm. It gets in your head. Then your brain. Then it rattles around. Aaaaaarrrggghhhh! As for the picture, I saw it today and snapped it because I was struck by the truth of it. Not everybody is good. Not everything is perfect. Not everything is awesome. (I am supremely pleased with myself for tying these two unrelated threads up like that, so I'm gonna bow out!) Today's question: pressed to say, what is the first thing that you think of that is "awesome"? There is something inherent in being a teacher that means you feel compelled to do your very best by the students you teach. To this end, I was in at work today, sorting out my room and trying to put things away in cupboards. However, as the sun was shining and I really didn't want to be at work, I brought home some paperwork to sort through later. Maybe. If the booze I got for Christmas doesn't undo me. And it might! Work for the sake of work is really something to avoid this year. Working today to free me up for a weekend where I have plans is definitely a smart move. Today's question: red or white? I made it to midnight last night, and was up this morning - tired but functioning. I currently have one New Year's Resolution - to try and be a better man. I would love to ask readers for theirs an for suggestions for me! I am hoping that the hospital will give me the all clear next week about my knee so I can take up running and squah again, as I miss exercise so much. Today's question then: what are yours? Bonus question: what else can i endeavour to do this year? |
