For our summer fair, one of the stalls is "Get the ball in to Me Neaves' mouth to win a prize"! Today's question: wtf?

I don't get it. A load of small rubber bands joined together. Then worn. I don't get it. The kids at my school LOVE them. However, we have a strict uniform rule that forbids wearing of bracelets etc and a mean Acting Deputy who is not afraid to be unpopular by asking them to be removed. So they appear on the water bottles. And everywhere else. And all the kids are making them. I don't get it. My 11 yr old (Thing 1) got some for his birthday and made his baby brother (Thing 2) some, one for Mrs Neaves and one for me. So, I've got one. I wear one. (You can imagine how that's gone over with the kids at school!) I just don't get it. Today's question: am I missing something? Just when we thought it was age to enjoy the sunshine, it clouds over. I was this (imagine two fingers held close together) to having a BBQ tonight. Good job we didn't. Still, at least I'm not at Glastonbury this year. (The time I was is a blog for another time! Let's just tease ahead with talk of Lenny Kravitz and Keanu Reeves!) As for now, the weather is holding. For now. Today's question: what kind of summer holiday will the children of the UK have this year? It's unusual for me to blog about something topical, but having had our Y6s so miserable about tennis on Wednesday, how great was it to see Murray strut his stuff today? I'm not a fan of tennis, but credit where it's due. The boy can play. And with England crashing out of the World Cup, I'm sure many people will be behind him. And the interview after the match was him showing a sense of humour and being self-deprecating. THAT'S a sportsman. And the guy he beat? Who ended up on his bum twice in the last two minutes of the match? He got up, grinned and shook Andy Murray's hand when he took the game. Not a bite in sight. Come on, Tim! Well - I did say I wasn't a fan. Today's question: will Andy Murray make us proud again? It's unusual for me to blog about something topical and of the moment, but having had our Y6s so miserable about tennis on Wednesday, how great was it to see Murray strut his stuff today? Well - I did say I wasn't a fan. Today's question: will Andy Murray make us proud again? Regular readers (reader!) will know I've recently moved home. Well, almost a month ago - where does the time go...? We have not yet got a landline or Internet. To be honest, I'm fine without the land line. This seems to only be for cold callers and those who tell me persistently that I was mis-sold PPI insurance. But I miss the Internet and having wifi. My phone is great, but limited. However we had booked for Sky (others etc) to come and fit it. We received a letter dated 14/06/14 that arrived on the 17th that they would be coming on the 13/06/14! And, according to THEIR "SYSTEM", we have it installed. (Please insert own expletives here.) Then, as it's on the system, they couldn't do anything. Then nobody confessed to stuffing it up so nothing happened. We are now a priority! We MAY be getting it in mid-July. Maybe. Sky's the limit? Sky HAS limits. Today's question: how would you cope? Having negotiated free use of theocal tennis courts for our upper Key Stage 2 classes for the afternoon, I led my Year 5s down. We spread out on to 5 courts from 13:00 - 14:00 and they had loads of fun smacking the balls over the fences, at each other and, every now and then, over the net. (Thanks to Mrs Stisted for having the cheek to ask if we could have a couple of extra empty courts as nobody was using them - as a mum, she's the first to get a Deputy Headteacher sticker from me!) I even got some of them playing doubles. We swapped when the Year 6s arrived and I led my merry - if slightly weary - troops back to do some science. Chance (yeah, right) had it that they were then discussing in Science how our bodies feel after exercise. I mean, talk about lucky! The Year 6s, how wet, grumbled that there was no water for them to drink, no shade to sit in and, believe it or not, they just didn't want to play tennis. The comments from our Games teacher about their attitude don't bear repeating. Such a shame - my class would have happily stayed for the second hour. Today's question: who can you please? I know that I some items try and do something clever / witty (in my own head!) with the title of the blog, but sometimes there's no need. At Thing 2's nursery they are raffling a hippo. It has been crotcheted and looks like it does in the photo. £1 a strip. To raise money for the nursery as part of their Summer Fair efforts. Win a crotcheted hippo. Brilliant. Today's question: how many strips of tickets would YOU like? Chilli. It's what I like to call my "see what's in the fridge that I can throw in a pan with something tomato-ey and serve on rice, pasta or noodles. At the end of a long day (an with Thing 2 awake with a cold and in out bed at 4-something this morning it's been a LONG day!) I like nothing more than dry heating some cumin powder, coriander seed and throwing everything into the pan. I take care to make sure I only include stuff I like and, as Mrs Neaves ha super-sensitive taste buds compared to my deadened ones, it's as bland as I can bare. Of course the jalapeños are added to mine just prior to serving - so I can feel chilli when it's chilly... Or when it's sweltering like tonight and I just want some comfort food. Look out taste buds! Today's question: what's your "go to" ready-in-20-minutes-from-scratch feel-good dinner? It's a little radical, but we like it. Or at least, I'm going to. It's been a beautiful day here on the South Coast and, having taken Thing 1 and Thing 2 swimming this morning, I set to the fence at the bottom of the garden. From dull, untreated brown to weatherproof and interesting blue. As are the weeds and dirt that surround it. And me. I was told I look like a smurf. Let's hope the sunscreen worked or I will soon look like a raspberry as well! Today's question: do I paint the garden furniture (table and 4 chairs) in the same blue or go for a totally different colour? I had a meeting with the school council yesterday, and something amusing happened. (Regular viewers will know that I threatened a number of amusing anecdotes from yesterday, and here is another...) They had done a survey to look at the Internet usage of the children at the school and how many go on line unsupervised and how many talk to strangers. They were shocked by the number. One of the Year 6s - lets just call him M to save his blushes - said, "Of course, when I was in Year 4, we didn't have tablets like they do now..." I repeated what he said and he realised how it sounded and we all had a good chuckle. He's now called (affectionately) Grandad! Today's questions: do you let your child talk to strangers on line unsupervised? How do you know they're not doing it whilst your distracted reading this? Stop! Stop reading this! Go check on your kids! Go! Why are you still here...? |
